We're not looking for where we belong.

So, in all the rush of big spring blockbusters I planned to see, but managed to miss (yeah I'm looking at you Alice in Wonderland and Clash of the Titans... let me introduce you to my blu-ray player) there's one that I won't be missing when it opens this weekend. And it's likely out of blind faith that I do, because after Stardust, I'm piqued to see what Matthew Vaughn will do next.

Besides, early buzz seems say that Kick-Ass lives up to it's name.

So there we go, superheroes with foul mouths, a great director and great buzz. What more can you ask for?

How about a thoroughly catchy title tune by Mika to tie it all up:

And here's the THOROUGHLY AND COMPLETELY NOT SAFE FOR WORK restricted trailer for the movie, lest you come away with the impression from Mika that this might be a film to take the kiddies to...

Want to be a Superhero?

Longtime readers may recall my fervor for a little movie called Stardust a few years back. You still all need to see it.

But for those of you still stubborn enough to avoid the serious charm of a modern fairy tale romance, you're in luck. Stardust director Matthew Vaughn has set his sights on another genre, and it looks, well, um, Kick-Ass.

I know I always wanted to be a superhero. Didn't you?

When you wish upon a star, you may get a second chance

I have raved about Stardust a few times already, and most of you sadly ignored my pleas to see this amazing movie. It is out on DVD today.

That means you can't use the old I hate going to movie theaters because that idiot in the third row keeps answering his phone and the sound is crap and my feet stick to the floor and the popcorn is stale excuse anymore.

This movie is well worth planting your ass on the sofa for a few hours of swashbuckling romantic movie magic! So do it!

When you wish upon a star, it might tell you take that!

For one Stardust fan in particular, "Good Morning!"

The Take That song that closes out the movie, "Rule the World," is finally being released as a single in the United Kingdom as part of the promotional push for the movie out there.

Many of you, it seems, chose to ignore my plea to see this wonderful movie. How do I know that? The box office numbers don't lie enough to hide it's middlingly United States box office tally.

Here's hoping the Brits have better taste than we do.

So, now, all you get for your laziness in not finding a theater to see it in, is this lame aged-boyband-ish video for a perfect as-the-credits-roll piece of uplifting ear candy. You really might want to just listen and ignore the video part. Read a book or something for the few minutes it's on.

Maybe you can imagine how perfect the song was for this modern fey fairytale.

When you wish upon a star, it might be your so-called life

Example

A while back, Matthew Vaughn made a star out of a certain future Bond and casually wrote his check into Hollywood's elite director's club. Then he did a strange thing. All set to play around with the X-Men universe, he suddenly bowed out for "personal reasons." It turns out Matthew Vaughn had something much more intriguing up his sleeve. His clever take on what happens when you see a shooting star is an enthralling way to end the summer blockbuster season. Stardust just happens to be -- magic.

You'll read a lot of comparisons between this movie and The Princess Bride, and it's obvious why. These are both fairy tales for a cynical world. But while The Princess Bride innocently laid its claim to true love in the hands of its heroes, Stardust is more about what it means to be loved, and how far one will go to find love.

Vaughn creates a parallel world that sweeps you away as soon as Tristan the shop boy figures out how to get past the mysterious wall outside of his village and is blown literally into the arms of a fallen star. His own claim to Claire Danes luminescence is soon thrown aside as a wild chase for the star ensues, snarling dueling heirs to a kingdom's throne with diabolical witches desperate for eternal life. Michelle Pfeiffer is pitch perfect as the evil witch who decays before your eyes and Robert DeNiro throws an unexpected curve ball as a sky pirate with panache. The joy of this movie is having an idea of where it's going, but not being quite sure how it's going to get there. It's a perfect summer fling, where you just let go and enjoy the ride into a magical world you haven't seen.

I'm still smiling hours later after catching a preview screening tonight, and I hope this movie finds the audience it deserves. It's a subversive romantic romp of epic proportions. Matthew Vaughn already was on my radar thanks to Layer Cake, but as far as I'm concerned, Stardust takes this shooting star (pun intended) to a whole new level. Do not miss this movie!
